"After 24 years in the Army, I saw an advert in the local newspaper. I am now a qualified ADI thanks to the instructor college. My school in the Isle of Man is thriving, I'm working hard earning good money (unfortunately I have to share it with the taxman and the local petrol station). I would particularly like to thank Graham Ketch, Rob O'connor, Liam & Steve and a lad in Liverpool whose name I've forgotten (sorry). They gave me the tools to become an ADI."
"Eight years ago, I was working in the Canary Islands as an interpreter, becoming a driving instructor couldn't have been further from my mind. However, four years ago I found myself back in London, a single parent with a daughter rapidly approaching school age. I decided I wanted to do something constructive and rewarding; to teach adults but be my own boss, to be well paid, to have a total flexibility in my working hours to fit in with schools, and a company car would be nice! I thought that I was asking the impossible until I saw the advert in my local paper for The Instructor College. I had little confidence in my ability, doubting I had what it took to be successful, but I was very determined. The Instructor College were fantastic throughout. Their approach was professional, encouraging and supportive, and they were able to arrange my training to suit my lifestyle.
Thee course was challenging, interesting and fun, especially part 3. I met some great people during my training, many of whom have become good friends. On completion of the course, I immediately began work with a small, local driving school which I enjoyed very much. However, two years on, I felt the urge to 'go it alone'. A while back, I bought a new car and formed my own business with two other female instructors. We now run our own driving school which is thriving."
"During the months that I did my training, I really did look forward to my visits to the College. After each session, my knowledge and driving skills were improving considerably, and the easy-going attitude of the training officers made learning a real pleasure. Because I was still in full-time employment whilst I was training the flexible arrangements offered by The Instructor College enabled me to work at the same time, which was essential." On qualifying, Kelvin chose a franchise placement with AA The Driving School, and is now regularly working over 30 hours a week. "I was well aware that I had to start from scratch, and began with just one pupil! But using customer and business skills taught by the college, I am pleased to say that the number of pupils I have is increasing daily."
After twenty years in the transport industry as a long distance lorry driver he was tired of spending five days a week away from home. It was a logical move to become a driving instructor, be his own boss and work close to home, with his choice of hours. All those years of driving left him with a great deal of expertise to pass on to learner drivers.
